Detailed description of Heron Lakes Golf Course -Great Blue

Heron Lakes Golf Course is a public 36-hole golf course facility located in Portland, Oregon. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses. They are. The Greenback Course and The Great Blue Course.

The Greenback Course first opened for play in 1971. The Greenback course was designed by Robert trent Jones, Sr. The Great Blue was built in two nine hole sections with the first nine opening in the late 1980s and the final nine opening in the early 1993. The Great Blue was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

The 6,608-yard Greenback Course is a flexible layout featuring elevated, bunker-framed greens and a generally easy-going demeanor. This parkland-style course attracts beginners, seniors, and others who welcome a moderate challenge in a beautiful setting. Greenback incorporates trees, six ponds, and 86 bunkers as it plays toward large, welcoming greens.

The Great Blue Course is a favorite challenge among low handicap golfers. The 6,902 yard course's fairways ramble between Scottish-style mounds and pose a collection of excellent risk/reward riddles for all four sets of tees.

Heron Lakes Golf Course has two 18 hole layouts to offer; the original Greenback and the more challenging Great Blue. I always let the greenskeepers know how good of a job they are doing, because for a "muni" golf course, the overall conditions are wonderful. As the summer gets into full swing, hotter weather makes any course difficult to maintain, and these folks make a nice effort to keep conditions as well as can possibly be expected. I would say the greens on both courses can compete with any in the area.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

This is a Robert Trent Jones course and is one of the better public tracks. Of all the city owned courses in the Portland area, it is my favorite. It is well-kept and difficult with a lot of risk-reward shot-making holes. A great walking course. The racetrack and freight train noise can be a bother, as can the lack of good drainage in the winter months (but what would you expect...this is Oregon). I hear there's a real clubhouse being planned and that would help ambiance a lot.

Get rid of the geese. They make an ulgy mess all over the fairways.

Challenging public course, adjacent to a race track (cars) with racing going on, there's lots of noise. You can actually see race cars from three holes! Loved the par threes over water and several risk/reward shots. #18 is one tough finishing hole! Lots of blue herons around the course.
